Nine

The incident with Rocky made me more determined than ever to track down and beat the absolute crap out of this Evil Santa.

After I’d dropped Rocky home, and he’d collapsed, sobbing, into his mother’s arms, I called Cindy in the elevator and explained the situation. Luckily, she knew Debbie’s sponsor, and within a few minutes, a lovely witch named Gwendolyn was on her way to Debbie’s apartment to check in on her.

I left the East Tower, dragging Dwayne, who was now covered with glittery star stickers, behind me. “Come on, sir,” I said. “It’s time to face Evil Santa.”

Dwayne perked up, strutting ahead of me as we walked down the path. About time. Where are we going?

“Well…” I grimaced. “We’re going to confront the goblin, Pom. Except I’m not one hundred percent sure it’s him anymore.”

Dwayne brightened even more. So, it’s the Other Guy?

“Maybe. I was sure it was Pom,” I muttered as I hurried through the snow to the North Tower where I’d tracked him before. “He knows Maya, and he’s been in her room. He’s the one who clears the mailbox, so he’s got access to the letter she wrote. Only he would know what she and Rocky asked for in their letters to Santa.”

So, what’s the problem?

“I didn’t register Pom’s smell in Rocky’s room,” I explained. “That’s the only hole in my theory. Rocky said that Santa was in his room. But Pom hasn’t been there. There were a lot of weird smells in his room, but no scent of the goblin.”

A noise just off the path caught my attention—a high-pitched, little girl voice, speaking in a very patronizing tone. “It’s an investment in your future, Valerie. You’re only one step away from making a decision that could change your whole life!”

I skidded to a halt. Fucking Jessica.

“No. Valerie needs casssh.”

Turning right abruptly, I stomped into the woods, listening to the naiad Jessica continuing her sales pitch.

“And you could have all the cash you ever could dream of! With just a tiny investment of those twenty dollars, you are on your way to being the proud owner of your very own business, Valerie,” she said condescendingly. “You can turn that twenty into a multi-six-figure business!”

I found them quickly, hidden in between the weeping willows surrounding the lake. “A twenty-dollar investment will get you this three bottle medicinal bundle pack, as well as all the marketing materials you need so you can spread the word of this fabulous business to all your other friends. Think of it! This time next Christmas, you could reach diamond boss-babe status, and you get your very own white sports car to drive around in!”

The poor, ragged vampire scowled, firmly holding the twenty I’d given her to her chest. “Valerie needs ratsss and casssh.”

“You can have everything you ever dreamed of. Cash and… um… rats. Trust me, you don’t want to let this opportunity slip through your fingers.” Jessica wagged her finger in Valerie’s face. “I don’t want you to regret this.”

I cleared my throat.
